De Floridanske gutta i Boat Stuff er ute med sitt vanskelige andrealbum. Oppfølgeren til den selvtitulerte debutskiva heter Cat Nap, og inneholder 7 låter, fordelt på vel 18 minutter. Effektivt, med andre ord.

Jeg oppdaga Boat Stuff takket være Spotifys algoritmer, da debutsingelen Beef Wiener kom ut ved juletider i 2023. Siden har jeg fulgt bandet, og gleda meg til dette albumet som jeg har venta på. I mitt hode kommer ny musikk ut på fredager, og derfor missa jeg dette plateslippet med 6 dager. Cat Nap, kom ut på selveste 17. mai, med alt det innebærer. Jeg deler skylda for min uoppmerksomhet med barnetog, påtvunget 4 timers dugnad med kaffetrakting på Reinen skole, og påfølgende bytur med folketog, pølser og is, Ja dere vet!
Har tatt steg
På Cat Nap sementerer Boat Stuff lydbildet sitt fra førsteskiva. De gjør fortsatt båtgreiene sine i den lille 90-talls grunge-punk-dammen sin. Det er likevel åpenbart at bandet har tatt steg. De høres voksnere ut. De er tightere, sikrere og tydeligere. Produksjonen og den tekniske kvaliteten er også på et annet nivå. Der mye av fascinasjonen min tidligere lå i at de hørtes så unge ut, handler det nå om at de er jævlig bra. Samtidig er jeg overbevist om at jeg hadde kjent igjen bandet i en “blindtest“ om jeg hadde hørt hvilken som helst av låtene på Cat Nap for første gang. Det er en sjelden kvalitet for et band på dette stadiet i karrieren!
Cat Nap
Åpningsporet Wayward går rett på sak, med tunge riff og raspete vokal. Likevel sitter jeg og leker med tanken på å høre denne låta framført av en fyr på en barkrakk med kassegitar. Andrelåta Stupid Face/I don’t like you ble fort min favorittlåt på albumet. I løpet av 18 minutter i tempoet Boat Stuff setter opp er det egentlig vanskelig å plukke ut topper og bølgedaler. For meg som nok er mer glad i punk og ska enn grunge kan jeg jo nevne All time couch fest, om jeg skal trekke ut ei låt til.
Alt i alt, er det ei nydelig plate. Og jeg gleder meg allerede til neste, og håper de dobler lengden. Samlet legde på de to første er ca 35 minutter. Verden trenger mye mer Boat Stuff enn det!
Er den verdt å ha på vinyl?
Absolutt! Jeg tror ikke den finnes på formatet, men det sekundet Eurojackpoten smeller inn, blir det telefon til The sunshine state!
New album from Boat Stuff
The floridian guys in Boat Stuff is out with the «difficult second album». The succussor to their self titeled debut is called Cat Nap, and consists of 7 tracs distributed over 18 minutes. That’s effective!
I discovered Boat Stuff thanks to Spotify’s algorithms, around Christmas 2023. That’s when they released their debut single Beef Wiener. I’ve followed the band ever since, and I’ve been waiting and looking forward to this album. In my head, new music is released on Fridays. That’s probably why I missed this release by six days. Cat Nap was released on May 17th – in Norway, that’s Constitution Day, with everything that comes with it. I blame my lack of awareness about the release on the children’s parade, four hours of mandatory volunteer coffee brewing at Reinen Elementary School, the citizens’ parade, hot dogs, and ice cream. (You’ll find everything you need to understand what I’m talking about at the bottom of this post.)
Steps are taken
On Cat Nap, the band cements the sound from their debut. They’re still doing their Boat Stuff in their own little pond of ’90s grunge and punk. However, it’s obvious that they’ve taken enormous steps. They sound more mature, tighter, more confident, and clearer. The production and technical quality are on a whole new level.
Where much of my fascination with the band earlier came from the fact that they sounded very young, now it’s about the fact that they’re just fucking great! At the same time, I’m convinced I could recognize the band in a blind test, no matter which track from Cat Nap I was introduced to for the first time. That’s a rare quality for a band at this stage in their career!
Cat Nap
The opening track gets straight to the point, with heavy riffs and gritty vocals. Still, I’m toying with the idea of this song performed by a guy on a barstool with an acoustic guitar. The second track, Stupid Face/I Don’t Like You, is my definite favorite on the album. That said, during these 18 minutes at this tempo, it’s hard to pick out high peaks and low valleys. Personally, I lean more toward punk and ska than grunge, so if I’m going to highlight one track, All Time Couch Fest is worth a mention.
All in all, it’s a great album, and I’m already looking forward to the next. I hope it’ll be twice as long – the first two albums combined are only about 35 minutes. The world needs more Boat Stuff.
Is it worth owning at vinyl?
Absolutely! I don’t think it’s available at the format, but if the Eurojackpot hits, I’ll make that phone call to the Sunshine State, the first I do!
